Lectio Divina 148

Saint Francis, quoted by Richard Rohr in an unpublished conference in Assisi, Italy in May, 2012.

Preach the Gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.

Jesus invites his followers to preach the kingdom of God. Some people interpret this to mean that you should go out into the streets and harangue people with dogma and scripture. I have trouble recognizing such people as fellow Christians. Their approach seems very foreign to me, and I can’t really imagine it resulting in any meaningful transformation. I believe Jesus means that we should try to speak in such a way that people will feel the presence of God, even when we don’t even mention God or anything to do with religion. However, this lovely quote from Saint Francis takes that idea one step further: Be such a way that people will feel the presence of God.
