Lectio Divina - Eighty-Five

Thomas Keating, Invitation to Love

The experience of God's love and the experience of our weaknesses are correlative. These are the two poles that God works with as He gradually frees us from immature ways of relating to Him. The experience of our desperate need for God's healing is the measure in which we experience His infinite mercy. The deeper the experience of God's mercy, the more compassion we will have for others.

We often imagine that God wants us to be perfect, to behave perfectly and think perfect thoughts. Father Keating describes the way in which God is able to use our weaknesses to help us grow. We become closer to God as we realize how desperately we need help and how pointless it is to pretend that we are self-sufficient.

Loving God, help me to be honest about how much I need your help. Teach me to recognize how much I need your healing love so that I will then be more compassionate with others.

Godess, in your strength is my weakness, and vice versa! How weird is that, how healing, how divine, how wild! Thank you for caring so much about me, help me to keep believing that.
