Lectio Divina - One hundred and twenty-one

Teresa of Avila, The Interior Castle

Just as we cannot stop the movements of the heavens, revolving as they do with such speed, so we cannot stop the movement of our thought. And then we send all the faculties of the soul after it, thinking we are lost, and have misused the time that we are spending in the presence of God.

I have so many ideas about what I ought to be doing. If only I could just stop, and be here right now, and have that be enough. God is trying to help me to stop worrying about all the things that I imagine in my fevered brain that God wants from me, when all God really wants is for me to stop in the midst of all my whirling about, and notice where I am: here.

Help me to be alive now. Now.

St. Teresa is teaching us about "mind chatter," I think. If you ever study yoga or Eastern meditation practices, you learn to acknowledge thoughts without judgment, but to let them pass by. Easier said than done!

Help me to let go of my attachment to my own thoughts, my intellect, my thinking self, to empty out and become silent so that I can be more fully present in God.

And yet we cannot help it. Oh, Godess, help me to be gentle with myself, my humanness, and Your wondrous otherness. Thank You. With love, Jeanne
