Lectio Divina - Ninety

Frederick Buechner, Listening to Your Life: Daily Meditations with Frederick Buechner, (New York: HarperCollins, Publishers), 1992, p. 185.

The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.

The Christian tradition has been distorted and misinterpreted in so many ways, and one of the most common distortions is that we must always repress and deny our own desires. But God uses our desires to lead us forward into the places where our energy is most powerful and our unique gifts can be used. Our own joyfulness and longing call us more fully into being, and the world is fed by our joy and aliveness. When we are trying to discover where we should place our efforts, we should run towards the sound of our own joy.
