Lectio Divina - Sixty-four

Meister Eckhart, quoted in Ann Belford Ulanov. The Unshuttered Heart: Opening Aliveness/Deadness in the Self. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 2007 p. 107

The more deeply we are our true selves, the less self is in us.

This paradox is at the center of the spiritual journey, that as we awaken and become our true selves, we also draw closer to being God in the world. The feeling of moving towards ourselves can be very frightening. Sometimes we might be afraid we are just being self-indulgent. But what is most uniquely us is also uniquely able to serve God.

Loving God, help me give my whole heart to you, to become what you have made me to be, to be myself in you. Help me to strip myself of all that is not you so that I may truly be myself.
